What is Manna?

Manna.

What is it? Manna is physical and spiritual nourishment, a gift of sustenance from God.

God’s Gift to His People

In short, manna is God’s gracious gift of food from the Heavens to his people, the Israelites while they traveled the wilderness for 40 years. It was collected each morning as needed, for that day alone, every day except for the Sabbath (Exodus 16).

“He rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven.” Psalm 78:24

Manna has multiple descriptors in the Old Testament of the Bible. It was described as similar to coriander seed, honey wafers or “honey bread.” The word “manna” in Hebrew literally translates to “what is it?”

The Hidden Manna

“Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.” Revelation 2:17

In the New Testament, God showed his children a new way to live. This was different in the literal sense of manna from the Old Testament. God gave the Israelites a way to obtain manna to satisfy their longing for a physical miracle. In the New Testament, Jesus became that miracle to God’s people as the bread of life.

The hidden manna is therefore Jesus Christ. Jesus is spiritual sustenance, the way to eternal life. Salvation was no longer a physical, tangible thing that could be achieved by good works. Salvation is a free gift from God, attained through believing in Jesus and finding new life, abiding by His word (the Bible).

Manna is mentioned in both the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation. In a sermon delivered shortly after the Feeding of the Five Thousand, Jesus compares God’s gift of body-nourishing manna to his own ability to eternally nourish the soul.

“I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever”

Daily Bread

I pray that you find spiritual nourishment as you collect manna every morning by reading the Word of God. I pray that Morning’s Manna will nourish your soul and help you on your walk with our Lord, Jesus Christ. “One does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” Deuteronomy 8:3-15
