How to Hear God Speak

Person reading Bible

The glory of God is revealed through His creation. Isn’t it so amazing that everything we see is specifically created by Him for us? He greets us in the morning with a sunrise, and says goodnight with a promise for a better day by sunset.

I feel closer to God in nature because this world was designed by His hand. Sometimes He communicates to me in different ways and not always with words. I find God in a gentle breeze, the sound of the waves hitting sand or a butterfly passing by. But the most foundational and sustaining way God speaks to me is through His word.

God’s word is divinely inspired by Him. Though many authors have contributed to it, the words they have written are all God-breathed. We can trust in the word of God because God is truth. Absolute, objective truth. His words centuries ago are still the same today. We are to read scripture with this mindset of God’s authority.

Do you want to understand what the Lord wants you to do? Read the Word of God. Do you want to speak to God and hear Him? Pray and wait quietly and patiently.

I’ll leave you with 7 practical ways to hear God speak:

  1. Read the word
  2. Meditate on scripture
  3. Pray
  4. Get alone with God
  5. Get out in nature
  6. Patiently wait
  7. Have faith he will answer

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” John 1:1-3

“And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.” 1 Thessalonians 2:13

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
